Pitching to the green encompasses everything from a full wedge shot to a short pitch over a bunker or heavy rough. Until late in the 20th century, almost all golfers carried two wedges, a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. As of publication date, however, it's now commonplace to see pros and other players carry four wedges, with a gap wedge and a lob wedge added to the their arsenal. The new wedges allow you to attack the green by hitting fuller shots — which are easier to control than one-half or three-quarters swings — in situations where you are in between distances. All of the wedges may be used to pitch from short distances, according to the type of shot you want to play and the obstacles between you and the green.
